The Idea Behind Matzah

Matzah says two opposite things at the Seder. At the start of the Haggadah we lift it and call it the bread of the poor man in Mitzrayim, and later we lift it again and it means freedom. How can the same piece of matzah stand for poverty and for freedom? The Maharal faces the contradiction head on, and his answer begins with a surprising definition of a slave. It leaves a question to ask yourself about everything you own, before you sit down at the Seder.
