Hire judges for Elul

Parshas Shoftim tells us to appoint judges and officers "lecha," for you, "bechol shearecha," at all your gates, and Rav Moshe Feinstein points out that the word "lecha" adds nothing to the sentence. Who plays each role, and what keeps the officer from falling asleep? A father's worried letter to the Steipler about his four-year-old hints at the daily habit that matters most.
