Who Are You?

Rabbi Yehuda holds, in a Gemara in Kiddushin, that when the Jewish people stop acting like Hashem's children, they are no longer called His children. How can that be? A son stays a son whatever he does.Parshas Shoftim opens with judges and police officers at "your gates," in the singular, and Rav Eliyahu Lopian in Lev Eliyahu reads those gates as the eyes, ears and mouth of every single person. Put the two together and Elul asks something uncomfortable of anyone who struggles to guard what they look at, listen to and say: who do you really take after?
