How Much Do We Really Believe?
The Torah describes the Jews crossing the Yam Suf twice, a few pesukim apart. The first time, they enter "in the sea on dry land". The second time, "on dry land in the sea". Even the word for wall is spelled differently. Why the repetition, the flipped order and the missing letter? The Vilna Gaon in Kol Eliyahu has one answer for all three, and it points to a question about where our trust really sits. A man worried about parnassah in Eretz Yisrael, who could not read Hebrew, lives it out years later.
